THROUGH MY EYES......The "EXPERIENCE" Roundup by Phil Sottile
As a competitor, promoter, and most recently a judge, I have the distinct pleasure of seeing the INBF from a most special point of view. Our 10th show, “AMERICANA”, as voted by you our athletes, proved to be our most successful show to date! Many great shifts in direction and people elevated the show’s prominence and we were excited by these decisions! We humbly thank our friends, family, and loved ones for helping to bring about a great show. I, Phil Sottle, always must thank my partner and friend, Durlan Castro for navigating the waves, ebbs, and flows that we have gone through as the years have gone by. I could not think of a better person to promote our shows with and could never see flying the flag of the Experience without him. Thanks again Durlan for being the energy behind my efforts to pull the show together before show day and for helping me bring that energy to another level on the day of the event!
We promise you all that next year, as every year, we will continue to upgrage the show and we will
reach YET ANOTHER new level, as we CONTINUE to create the standard
by which our fellow promoters judge their competitor experience!

An experienced competitor and Head Judge in Eric Goldfarb was ‘The Experience’s” single greatest move, as he expertly moved the show smoothly and effectively forward, enhancing the “competitor experience” while giving 54 athletes a ‘good look’ at the winner’s slot!
Our day’s show started with the Women’s Figure and at the end of the day, a professional WNBF card was on the line. Eight fine ladies gave the five judges (this one included) a rough and tough job of finalizing the placements. I won’t lie; I was the judge holding up the line for final placements. But, an INBF judge wants to get it right and we take the time we need to do it! Zena Harris, Vivian Greaves, and Edna Garcia gave the staff a hard enough time to place outside of the top five finishers, while Veronica Mauro and Isolde Spatafora battled for the 5th and 4th place finishes respectfully. Amy Mayville’s fine shape earned her third though it was a close call with runner up Robyn Europe who won the tie-breaker. At night’s end, we crowned new Queen of Long Island Figure and FIRST TIME COMPETITOR Tennille Ray our new WNBF Professional Figure Card winner and Champion.
As always, the night’s events highlighted many competitive classes and like the men, the women come to do battle too! Sarita Danvers uncontested her win in the Lighweight Open Class to meet up against first time competitor and winner of the Heavyweight Open Women, Jacky Petridis. Both received first place votes but Sarita was just a bit tighter and it carried her to the night’s overall win!
We are fortunate to always have great over-40 masters men in our show and the over-50 men were given the choice to cross into the class to mix it up ‘with the kids’. Result: A great day of seasoned bodybuilding! Continuously improving Luis Casalduc (our evening’s spirit award winner), rounded out the top 5 while his training partner Michael Sabella nabbed 4th. Stoic James Siletti showed a very impressive, hard physique but was narrowly beaten by Bill Young, who managed to earn a first place vote. The winner of the day was Mark Semel who brought a total package to “The Experience” and walked away the winner.
Moving to the Grandmasters, Rolando Seda finished 4th and 3rd place was earned by the athlete’s pick for most inspirational and audience’s choice as favorite, Rene Silvin. At 61, Rene came from North Carolina to inspire our show to grow and surmount incredible feats going forward. Why? Rene is a late, stage cancer survivor! (Did we mention he is also an accomplished writer, former CEO, and a heck of a nice guy?) James Siletti and Bill Young mixed it up again and congratulated each other’s fine presentations as Bill was the Grandmaster of choice on this day!
3 teenage men arrived this day to have their bodybuilding potential assessed. Brian Papszycki narrowly beat Nick D’Agostino for the runner’s up spot while Matt Gelormino’s combination of mature size and conditioning helped him run off with the class!
Novice men are bodybuilders that have not finished in the top 3 in the Open or have not yet won their competitive class. Seemingly no less talented than our open classes, a strong complement of novice athletes came to begin or continue their journey to greatness through “The Experience”. Divided into 4 divisions, Chris Demartino claimed the undisputed “bantamweight” division title, while first time competitor and talented lightweight division winner Andre Vettorato waged war with runner up Alone Powers. Michael Paladino finished third, frequent competitor Lenny Dohler finished 4th, followed by Rene Silvin and Mark Taff.
Frank Ruiz claimed a unanimous win in the middleweight division over Matt Gelormino, while Bill Young finished 3rd and ahead of John Barlanti, improving Juan Amijos, and Eric Harrington.
Late entry Shawn Weinman called me that morning for directions to Long Island and that proved to be the start of a great day, winning the Novice Heavyweight division over David Garcia and Nick D’Agostino for a trip to the overall novice standoff.
At night’s end, Frank Ruiz earned his first overall win in the novice by unanimous decision to begin his new quest of earning his WNBF pro card in the near future!
Not to be outdone, the Open Men took the stage to vie for the Overall win in this year’s show.
Michael Sabella dropped enough weight to do battle with close friend and training partner, Luis Casalduc to claim his Bantamweight victory.
As for this promoter (also a competitor), I know first hand what Diamond Harding is capable of having been beaten by him TWICE this year! He continued his winning ways by moving past Mark Semel and third place finisher, Tony Danvers to win the Lightweight Division and lay in wait for an overall contest.
Rolando Seda Jr. showed that he’s a chip off the ol’ bodybuilding block by showing his father (who also competed this day) that he’s made of tough stuff by beating competitive James Siletti in the Middleweight division.
Rolando Sr. came out to round out the heavyweight class, being bettered only by two awesome bodybuilders in Valencia Fitness’ Thomas Reilly who finished as the runner up, and winner Jeff Kropacek.
Big and vascular Kropacek returned to the stage to do battle with Sabella, Harding, and Seda Jr. Though big and impressive, Kropacek’s size (or smile), nor Sabella’s conditioning, or Seda Jr’s shape was going to top Harding’s wonderful combination of symmetry, conditioning, muscularity, and size. The Lighweight stood tall on this day and was crowned the day’s overall winner in the Men’s Open divisions.
A WNBF Figure Pro card for Ray, an Overall Men’s win for Harding, an Overall Women’s win for Danvers and another great “Experience” for all our bodybuilders and spectators. Does it get better than the INBF??
